Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1974. First edition. Thames and Hudson. London. 1974. First edition. Hardback, quarto; brown cloth-bound boards, dust jacket. 192 pages. 383 b&w illustrations. English. 260x210mm. 0.95kg. Very good, in near fine dust jacket; a couple of small nicks to lower edge, a couple of small corner creases to rear flap; off-setting to endpapers, previous owner's pencil inscription to front free endpaper; a tight, crisp copy. The desirable hardback edition of this groundbreaking book on the destruction of country houses in Britain. The book was published concurrently with the exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. It acted as a call-to-arms to stop the demolition of stately homes that had started in the 19th century and which gathered momentum after the two World Wars when the upkeep of these houses became too expensive and impractical. The campaign garnered much coverage and achieved much success in its aims. Over 300 demolished houses are illustrated in archival photographs and many more are listed in the appendix. Beaux Books specialises in fine and rare books on art and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. We welcome questions about our books and we are happy to provide any extra images. Buy with confidence from an experienced bookseller.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. The scarce hardback volume accompanying the landmark V&A exhibition of 1974. Fine: tight and square binding in sharp brown cloth; bright gilt lettering and publisher's motif; some offsetting/browning to the endpapers (as is invariably the case with this edition); just the merest trace of spotting to the top edge of the page block (only), else very bright, crisp and clean. The unclipped dustwrapper is Near Fine: crisp and vibrant; two short tears (7mm & 4mm), sealed to the verso with professional mending tissue; a little rubbing to the spine tips and corners, otherwise excellent; presented in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard.
