One of Australia's most outstanding soldier-surgeons, Sir Neville Howse was awarded the Victorian Cross for his heroism during the Boer War. He remains the only Australian medical officer to have recieved the VC. He later served at Anzac Cove, where he save the lives of 2,000 wounded men. He was knighted three times for his services. As Minister of Health he encouraged medical research, notably cancer research, setting up the world's first radium banks. He died in 1930, a truly great Australian. Size: Octavo. Book.

During the First World War he served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front.

He received a VC from the Boer War, was Senior Medical Officer at Anzac Cove and in 1921 was appointed Director General of the Medical Services of the Australian Miltary Forces where he was responsible for many significant reforms. Howse was the first member of an Australian military unit and the only Australian medical officer to have received the Victoria Cross.
