Illustrated with folding maps, folding plates, and colour plates. Colonel Sir Henry Yule offers a translation of the travels of Marco Polo in these attractive leather bound volumes. With thirty five plates to volume I, including three folding plates and five folding maps. With eighteen plates to volume II, including a colour plate and three folding plates. The third edition of this work includes a memoir of Yule by his daughter. The Venetian merchant and explorer recorded his travels through Asia along the silk road in the thirteenth century. The Travels of Marco Polo offered Europeans their first comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of countries such as China, Persia, India, and Japan, and detailed the wealth and size of the Mongol Empire and the Yuan Dynasty. In a full leather binding. Externally, very smart. Lightly rubbed to the spine, with a tiny chip in the leather to the head of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional patch of light scattered foxing. Very Good Indeed. book.

It is a miracle that some academic in Beijing was interested enough to print these volumes in those times and another miracle that they survived the l wars between the Nationalists, the Communists and Japan that were devastating China in 1942. No copies traced in any library or auction records, and the Hakluyt Society cannot account for the Peking printing. A rarity In excellent condition.

From the Adventure and Exploration collection of James Stephen â Steveâ Fossett with his bookplate to the pastedown of each volume. American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. He completed the 2002 trip in 13 days, 8 hours, and 33 minutes and set records for both the Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon and Fastest Balloon Flight Around the World. Fossett was also one of sailingâ s most prolific distance record holders set the Absolute World Speed Record for airships with a Zeppelin NT in 2004. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including aviationâ s highest award, the Gold Medal of the Fà dà ration Aà ronautique Internationale (FAI), which he was awarded in 2002.
