From the Preface: "The narrative is based on the Battalion War Diary, supplemented by information obtained from personal diaries and letters and from other sources." Six appendices: Roll of Honour; Summary of Casualties; Roll of Officers and Men Who Went to Flanders with the Battalion in April, 1915; Summary of Honours and Decorations; Record of Battles and Engagements; Notes on the Illustrations. A detailed history of the battalion's service during World War I. The 50th (Northumbrian) Division was extended to three battalions for war service in 1914. Starting in October 1916, the 2/5th served as a garrison battalion in Salonika, while the 3/5th formed the 5th (Reserve) Battalion. In 1915 the 1/5th went to France. On the Western Front they saw a great deal of action at the battles of Ypres (1915, 1917); actions of the Bluff (1916); the Somme (1916, 1918); Arras (1917); and battles of the Lys, Estaires, Hazelbrouck, and the Aisne.
