Dragnich's The First Yugoslavia: Search for a Viable Political System (1983, Hoover Institution Press) analyzes the failure of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (1918 - 1941) to establish a stable democracy. The 182-page study examines the centralist-federalist conflicts and the profound impact of the Serbo-Croatian national question on the country's collapse. Key insights from the work include: Failure of Democracy and Dictatorship: Dragnich argues that the initial democratic experiment failed, followed by the failure of King Alexander's dictatorship and subsequent "guided democracy" attempts. The National Question: The core issue was the inability to reconcile the divergent political, cultural, and national interests of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Centralism vs. Federalism: The state struggled with the struggle between a centralized structure favored by many Serbs and the federalist aspirations of others, notably the Croats. Scholarly Perspective: It provides an analysis of the political systems and institutions of the interwar period. The book is recognized as a key text on the politics and government of Yugoslavia between 1918 and 1945.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket.
