Bound in the publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the front cover and spine, top edge gilt, other edges unevenly trimmed, marbled paste-downs and end-papers. Condition very good, corners spine ends and hinges a bit rubbed, cloth a little chipped at the head and tail of spine on volume I, front hinges a bit loose on volume I, contents are very clean throughout. Hardcover. First Edition. Numerous b&w photographs and line drawings. Ownership signature "Rodney Dennys, Tehran, 8. iii. 43" is on the endpaper. (He was a member of MI6 operating in north Africa during the war and who was eventually head of British Intelligence for the Middle East and North Africa for a time in the 1950s). Rebound in very similar coloured cloth with entire original cloth neatly laid over. The original cloth, with gilt lettering, is faded with some pale damp stains to the lower part of the boards and a few spots. Some foxing here and there. A travelled copy but ow very good indeed. Loosely inserted is a 27pp offprint from Ibis 1951, 'Notes on the Birds of Central Anatolia by N. J. P Wadley, and also 4 typed pages in Dennys's hand, detailing birds he saw in Anatolia on a trip in 1952.
