Accounts of the first ascent of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, accomplished by local Jacques Balmat and companion, Michel Gabriel Paccard, on August 8th, 1786, the feat of which earned them prize money that had been offered by Horace Benedict de Saussure in 1760 to anyone who could climb the mountain. De Saussure's own successful ascent in 1787, and the September, 1870, attempt by a party including Americans Mr. Randall, of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and Dr. Beane, of Baltimore, Maryland, that met tragedy as all were killed after being trapped in a storm, and the 1821 tragic ascent by Dr. Hamel and party which met with a fall that killed several members.
