Grünbaum examines the famous paradoxes of Zeno of Elea—particularly th…ose involving motion, infinity, continuity, space, and time—in light of modern mathematics and physics. The work connects ancient philosophical problems with contemporary questions concerning the structure of space-time, infinite processes, geometry, and the philosophical interpretation of modern physical theory. The book remains recognized as an important modern philosophical treatment of Zeno's paradoxes; the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy specifically cites Grünbaum's volume as a detailed defense of the standard mathematical solution to the paradoxes. Condition: Good hardcover in a substantially worn Poor dust jacket. Black cloth boards show rubbing, surface wear, and significant areas of pale surface residue/discoloration along the fore-edge side of the front board, particularly toward the upper and lower corners. Spine remains sound and lettering readable. Interior pages shown are clean and generally well preserved with light age toning. Original dust jacket is present but heavily worn. Jacket has extensive rubbing and scuffing, numerous creases, edge tears and chips, substantial loss around the head of the spine, and considerable staining/discoloration to the rear panel, including evidence of moisture exposure. Jacket remains substantially intact but is appropriately graded Poor due to the cumulative wear and staining. Please see photographs for a full representation of condition. Significance / Collector Appeal: A first edition of an important work in twentieth-century philosophy of science and philosophy of physics. Grünbaum was particularly influential in philosophical discussions of space, time, geometry, and scientific explanation, and this volume applies those concerns directly to one of philosophy's oldest problems: Zeno's paradoxes of motion and infinity. The first edition was issued by Wesleyan University Press in 1967 and contains x + 148 pages. The subject gives the book crossover appeal to collectors of philosophy of science, physics, mathematics, ancient philosophy, logic, infinity, and the philosophy of space and time.
