This study investigated the effects of petroleum products(diesel, kerosene and petrol) and their water soluble fractions(WSF) on cardiovascular function, packed cell volume and plasma lipid profile in experimental rats(Rattus norvegicus).The petroleum products and their WSF were administered into rats for three weeks. They were anaesthetized with a mixture of urethane and alpha chloralose in 0.9 saline. the rats were cannulated using a polythene catheter filed with solution of heparin. The femoral artery was cannulated for recording of the arterial blood pressure and heart rate. Blood samples were collected for plasma lipids assay while internal organs were harvested and weighed. The control rats received water only. The study revealed that petroleum fractions and their WSF altered cardiovascular function and plasma lipids profile, while fall in PCV was not significant. 76 pp. Englisch.

While some regards crude oil as sheep remedy for any form of ailments including poisoning,convulsion,skin infections e.tc.,even protection against witchcraft. This practice is not only among the dwellers of Niger Delta area of Nigeria. It may cause physiological stress and dysfunction. Three studies were carried out in this work. Effects of two weeks oral administration of crude oil on haematological parameters in rats were reported in chapter three - it showed that crude oil decreased PCV, RBC and increased WBC. In chapter four effects of crude oil on plasma electrolytes, plasma lipids and PCV were examined-results showed increased in plasma sodium and decrease in PCV. While the effects of a petroleum product(gasoline) was examined on rats in chapter five- even though it appear not to alter RBC, WBC and PCV but it significantly decreased the haemoglobin concentration. 84 pp. Englisch.

Ces concentrations peuvent entrainer un stress physiologique et des dysfonctionnements. Cette etude a examine les effets des produits petroliers (diesel, kerosene et essence) et de leurs fractions hydrosolubles (WSF) sur la fonction cardiovasculaire, le volume globulaire et le profil lipidique plasmatique chez des rats de laboratoire (Rattus norvegicus). Les produits petroliers et leurs WSF ont ete administres aux rats pendant trois semaines. Ils ont ete anesthesies avec un melange d'urethane et d'alpha-chloralose dans une solution saline a 0,9 %. Les rats ont ete canules a l'aide d'un catheter en polyethylene rempli d'une solution d'heparine. L'artere femorale a ete canulee pour enregistrer la pression arterielle et la frequence cardiaque. Des echantillons de sang ont ete preleves pour analyser les lipides plasmatiques, tandis que les organes internes ont ete preleves et peses. Les rats temoins n'ont recu que de l'eau. L'etude a revele que les fractions petrolieres et leurs WSF modifiaient la fonction cardiovasculaire et le profil lipidique plasmatique, tandis que la baisse du VPC n'etait pas significative.
