Alabone's Multo-Epicycloidal and Other Geometric Curves (1910) is a rare and visually striking work showcasing complex geometric patterns created through ornamental turning. Using a Holtzapffel four-part chuck, Alabone produced intricate epicycloidal curves, which were ela…borately printed in multiple colours. Interestingly, Alabone was a controversial surgeon, stemming largely from his secretive remedies and unorthodox approach, and was eventually struck from the medical register, yet he found solace in ornamental turning, making this book a unique blend of art, mathematics, and craftsmanship. The work is notable not for detailed technical processes, but for its vivid illustrations: 78 multi coloured plates that highlight Alabone's artistic mastery, a testament to his inventiveness. Most copies were privately distributed, making it a prized collectible that uniquely bridges medical history and decorative art. Original maroon boards, gilt spine, and gilt lettered & decorated to the upper board. 16 pages, 78 plates, including a photograph. The plates, on gloss paper, are all of fantastic geometric examples are printed in a mixture of single colours and multiple colours. On the front turn-in is the bookseller's ticket; Malcolm Gardner, Horlological Bookseller, London. A bright and clean copy, with only minor wear at the extremities of the binding, no cracking at joints, no loose pages or damage. A pleasant copy of a verey unusual book. Size: 16 x 25 cms. A scarce volume of complex curves produced with a Holtzapffel four-part chuck by the controversial surgeon Dr Edwin William Alabone (1849-1913). Following a popular book claiming to offer a cure for tuberculosis, Alabone was eventually struck from the medical register but continued practising, fighting legal challenges the whole way. His preferred method of relaxation from the stresses involved was evidently ornamental turning; this was the first of his publications showing off his creations. It omits any technical information about his process or machinery, but is elaborately printed in multiple colours, often on the same plate. It was probably printed at Alabone?s own expense and most copies privately distributed by him, there being a pattern on the first leaf just right for putting a presentation inscription in.

Author's presentation inscription to opening blank page, with original mechanical drawing in ink, dated 1910. Alabone was a medical doctor w…ith a specialism in consumption, a subject on which he published a number of books. He took up the hobby of producing these stunning drawings by mechanical means and was persuaded to publish them by his friends, including Prof. Richard Kerr who wrote the introduction. Willcox was Physician to St Mary's Hospital, London, where he lectured on chemical pathology, forensic medicine and related subjects. As scientific analyst and honorary medical adviser to the Home Office, he was associated with many famous criminal trials, and became widely known to the British public in the early years of the twentieth century. The drawings take as there starting point patterns in nature, but their evolution to the patterns illustrated here involved calculations and the construction of a machine consisting of a series of tiers or planes of wheels rising vertically in parallel order. The introduction states that "when in motion all traces of friction are absent, so true is every detail of every wheel, of every cog, of every screw." Very good, some slight wear to the extremities, foxing to the preliminaries but the plates are unaffected. One page torn. A strange and beautiful book.
