The papers presented at the conference are published her…e. The purpose of the conference was firstly to consider utilization of an imagological viewpoint in the study of history in general. The themes included national and international symbols, persons and groups of people, but also images, as explaining factors in political and economic decision-making. Secondly, the conference examined interaction between cultures, because it has always been apparent how difficult it is to understand others and dissimilarity. Images of others and dissimilarity are similar to a biological territory that protects one's own species. The purpose of the conference was to shed light on these problems through examples from different ages, which provide an additional perspective in examining corresponding phenomena today. If we understand the processes related to images, we can also understand ourselves better.

Algeria Modern analyses the complexity of state and society and the strategies that social and political actors employ. It demonstrates how interest groups that constitute the core of the regime are linked to both the security and business sectors, which while defending their turf and united by shared values are, however, in perennial competition. Embedded in a broader Maghreb and Sahel region that has been marked by civil war, rebellions, and foreign military intervention, many Algerians seem, albeit reluctantly, willing to endure the current hybrid form of authoritarian order as long as it provides a minimum of security and welfare. Buffeted by the Arab spring, Algeria stands out as a more stable exception to broader trends in the Middle East. Will this endure?
