First edition. 8 pages of preliminaries, then 378 pages plus 4 of ads and a 44-page catalogue dated August 1886. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's red cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and black, the cloth is quite marked and rubbed, the spine is sunned with loss to the ends and the corners are bumped. The te…xt block is slightly foxed, marked and age toned, with slight cracking at points. From the library of notable parapsychologist and paranormal investigator, Alan Gauld (1932-2024), with his small bookplate to the front pastedown and neatly written name in ink to the verso of the front endpaper. An interesting title by a French psychologist co-authored with a slightly older French physician, which begins with a history of mesmerism, and then becomes a detailed illustrated study of hypnotism, its effects, possibilities, and ethical implications.
