Dustwrapper somewhat worn and mottled, with p…aper tape repairs to reverse; cloth tape reinforcing to lower hinge. Very good condition, in a modest dustwrapper. "De Vignon van Alphen's Knysna sketches represent a unique contribution to middle 19th century art in South Africa, yet they are hardly known today. . It was the awesome grandeur of nature in the Knysna forests that provided van Alphen with the subject matter most adequate to his romantic needs. He seems to have sensed in it a strange mingling of power and beauty to which his inmost being responded, and to which he was able to give expression by means of his particular medium - sketches in bistre, ink and pencil.".
