Education Watch is a civil society initiative to monitor the primary and basic education status in the country disseminate findings and promote dialogue in this respect. This is the sixth report of this initiative. The previous reports addressed different aspects of primary education and the state of literacy in Bangladesh. These included internal efficiency learning achievement of students literacy level of the population a probe into inter connected factors bearing on performance of schools and children at primary level and socio economic correlates of primary education and literacy. The sixth Education Watch report is the first one on the state of secondary education in Bangladesh. It attempts to construct a baseline of basic indicators on how the sub sector functions especially in respect of provisions for services and their internal efficiency. In keeping with the objectives and practice of Education Watch studies the aim also is to contribute to informed dialogue on policy and actions and to facilitate for this purpose civil society participation in the development of education policies and strategies. The defining theme of Education Watch studies is making education relevant to overarching national objectives of poverty reduction by promoting equitable access to education equipping young people with knowledge and skills for the competitive market place and building a democratic polity. With in this framework the practical questions of reconciling quality with wider and equitable access to secondary education have been given attention. Eleven items have been identified as key considerations in defining policy and programme priorities in the development of secondary education. 186 pp.

In Bangladesh, due to competition with main crop rice, mungbean cultivation is shifted to marginal l…ands with low fertility. There is urgent need to identify genotypes that would give optimum yield under nutrient stress environment. On nutrient deficient soils, traditional approach is to change the soil to fit the plant i.e fertilizers and other soil amendments are applied to increase soil fertility and/or to make soil nutrients available for plants' uptake. The exploitation of plant genetic variations to increase the efficiency with which plants absorb and utilize the nutrients has been increasingly emerging as an alternative approach towards low nutrient environments.From the results of series of three experiments it may be said that wide diversity in mungbean genotypes were observed in adaptation under sub-optimal and optimal nutrient environments, which could be exploited for screening high yielding genotypes that would best fit in low nutrient environments. Genotypes that fit specific level of N is urgent.GK3 and IPSA25 may be the target genotypes. 120 pp. Englisch.

The research carried out the significant relationship among different body length parameters and seasonal growth curves to asses t…he growth variation of the population of Notopterus notopterus. The species showed female dominating distribution including homogeneity in yearly distribution. The condition factors showed variation in growth patterns indicating gradual development of gonad in relation to the sexual cycle. The fish is carnivore and feeds on a large variety of food items. The gonads are found unpaired having short ducts which originate from the left abdominal cavity beside the alimentary canal and bellow the kidney. The breeding period extend from May to September. The fish is able to breed naturally, even in stagnant water of carp polyculture system. The sandy-loam soil of the pond, submerged vegetation and suitable water quality enhanced the breeding process of the fish. The findings of the work will play vital role in production and conservation of the species.
