El concepto de límite o frontera delimita y define también a aquellos pueblos, sociedades y culturas que se encontraban situadas en los confines de la civilización grecorromana, que, lato sensu, puede tomarse como origen de gran parte de la identidad de lo que se entiende como Occidente hoy día. La oposición entre civilización y barbarie ?"nosotros y los otros", parafraseando a Tzvetan Todorov? ha sido fundamental para entender el devenir de la historia de las ideas (y de las ideologías) en Europa y América. Los orígenes de esta dicotomía remiten inexorablemente a la antigüedad La frontera condiciona a los habitantes de uno y otro lado en los diversos códigos que se utilizan para conceptualizar la diferencia en lo que puede llamarse un "discurso de la frontera", que es utilizado por el poder político, por la parte de la sedicente civilización, frente a los otros pueblos del otro lado de la frontera, pero también frente a los que habitan en sus márgenes y están en contacto con ella: en ese sentido, el límite y la frontera, tanto como sus diversas modalidades en la antigüedad ?la tierra de nadie, el yermo fronterizo o los hitos y construcciones de transición entre dos comunidades? sirven para redefinir tanto a los ciudadanos como a los extranjeros. Este libro estudia la conceptualización de los confines en la civilización clásica ?y su recepción cultural? de una manera transversal, como de los resultados del proyecto de investigación que desarrollado gracias a una ayuda del Vicerrectorado de Investigación de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED). La presente monografía estudia el origen y el desarrollo del concepto de frontera en el mundo antiguo, desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria, en un análisis diacrónico de las fuentes comparadas desde la época griega hasta el Bajo Imperio romano, pero también en la investigación sobre sus interesantes postrimerías en el mundo europeo posterior. *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente.
