This opens to reveal a Plan of Jerusalem 20x15cm. Very good with a patch of scuffing to the lower right corner on the back partially impacting the decorative border, and faint damp stain to the lower fold and edges. Undated, but the New York branch opened in the early 1920s and ceased operation in 1926. This was given out free to customers. The American Colony in Jerusalem established Vester & Co American Colony Stores in the early 1900s. Located near Jaffa Gate, it was well placed to tap into the tourism and archaeology markets. The advert lists an extensive range of "Oriental articles of every description", including local curios, jewelry, embroideries, carpets, photos and postcards (by its own Photo Department among others), guide books, maps, olive-wood bound Bibles and prayer books, antiquities, botanical collections, etc. The Plan shows Jerusalem bounded by the American Colony (N), Mount of Olives (E), Valley of Hinnom (S), and the Mohammedan Cemetery (W) on an approx scale of 1:16K. Jerusalem's 4 Quarters, Christian, Mohammedan, Jewish, and Armenian, are colour blocked along with Moriah and "Russian Property" (the Russian Compound). Major locations (cultural and religious, hotels etc) are captioned in the image or in a numbered list, with an arrow pointing to American Colony Stores.
