Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 4-40 or fight." Polk became President on the strength of it. Starving, wind-red men and women- Americans on the march- streamed into Oregon. And the British watched, biding their time. The Indians waited. Curt Fletcher and Sunset Lee were Americans b (illustratore). Oregon settlers were not prepared for Kitty Gatewood. She was little and exquisite, extravagantly out of place amid these buck skinned pioneers. Her story has the thrilling ring of truth because it is based on exhaustive research, because Mildred Masterson McNeilly is herself a true daughter of the West, and because her narrative still glows with that nebulous quality - a woman's intuition.

No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Not books but a group of six, 45 rpm, vinyl "single" rock and/or rhythm & blues records, vinyl generally very-good-plus, though we'll grade Tony Joe White's "Polk Salad Annie / Aspen Colorado" -- Mn45-1104, both sides credited to Tony Joe White -- "near mint," and thus the most valuable of this lot, this disc alone with a current market value of about $11.50. ("Polk Salad" refers to cooked pokeweed, a dish even a family from White's native Louisiana would have to be pretty poor to serve for dinner. The song -- later covered by both Elvis Presley and Tom Jones -- was White's first big hit. Well, possibly his only big hit. But it opened the way for him to do considerable writing and producing for others.) The Cliff Nobles disc may be even more interesting. The "B" side is merely an instrumental version of Nobles' "Love Is All Right" (both sides credited to producer Jesse James), featuring the studio horn section which would later become known as MFSB. Nobles himself does not actually perform on the track. But it caught fire at radio stations, selling a million copies and peaking at number 2 for three weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart -- being held out of the number one spot by Herb Alpert's "This Guy's In Love With You." Six 45 rpm "singles" from the year 1968, for one price, now reduced from $25.

With the measured dignity of some timeless Indian chant the words come rolling: You see, I stand in good relation to the earth. to the gods. to all that is beautiful. You see, I am alive, I am alive. That expression of the North American Indian's personal philosophy sets a cadence in the opening chapter of this book. It is a view of a world in balance, of man in harmony with the earth and all things on it. Untold centuries of adaptation to the environment forged the equations. They echo today among a people whose rebounding numbers total perhaps as many as when Columbus arrived to call them "Indios." Descendants of Ice Age Asiatics, aboriginal Americans developed cultures as varied as the regions they settled. Life-styles blossomed in rich array. Now, in 400 fact-filled pages of this remarkable volume, you can explore those many fascinating worlds. Ten distinguished scholar-guide you. Dare flashing flukes of a whale with intrepid seamen of the Pacific northwest and join in their elaborate potlatches. Play stickball-"younger brother of war"-with woodland farmers or go on an Iroquois raid. Count coup with Plains warriors, beseech rain gods with Hopi Snake dancers, learn that Indian languages-whee one word may contain all the elements of a sentence-can hardly be called "primitive." Use the book's tribal supplement and 321/2-by-371/2-inch cultural map to discover details about nearly 600 tribes of the United States and Canada. More than 440 illustrations-362 in full color-enrich this vivid account of the American Indian's beliefs, customs, crafts, and accomplishments.

It offers detailed evidence of the progress our nation has made in the past 50 years in living up to American ideals. But the study makes clear that our work is far from over." ?President Bush, Remarks by the president to the National Urban League Conference The product of a four-year, intensive study by distinguished experts, A Common Destiny presents a clear, readable "big picture" of blacks' position in America. Drawing on historical perspectives and a vast amount of data, the book examines the past 50 years of change and continuity in the status of black Americans. By studying and comparing black and white age cohorts, this volume charts the status of blacks in areas such as education, housing, employment, political participation and family life.
