Qui sono analizzate la preadolescenza e l'adolescenza, attraverso l'esame di settecento protocolli Rorschach di ragazze e ragazzi tra i 10 ei 16 anni. I risultati, ricavati dai copiosi dati statistici e confrontati con lo studio evolutivo di Gesell, mettono in evidenza alcune costanti Nell'adolescenza si alternano periodi di esuberanza e di introversione, e quindi lo sviluppo non è lineare. Man mano che l'individuo matura, si affermano le caratteristiche personali a scapito di quelle evolutive. E infine, il mutamento in direzione dell'età adulta si fa progressivamente più lento. Particolare risalto danno gli autori alle differenze tra i sessi, che si mantengono nel tempo, sia pure con caratteristiche diverse. In tutto il volume si sottolinea poi il pericolo di valutare i protocolli giovanili in base a parametri adulti, che potrebbero produrre interpretazioni distorte, specie per quanto riguarda i "segnali di pericolo", dopo aver tracciato un panorama generale delle tendenze evolutive più significative, gli autori forniscono un "ritratto" per ogni età dai 10 ai 16 anni, desumendolo dall'analisi di cinquanta protocolli maschili e cinquanta femminili.
