The publisher, Bharat Kala Bhavan is widely recognized as the finest university museum in India. Founded in 1920 and originally associated with the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, it rose to its current prominence under the guidance of the renowned art historian, Rai Krishnadasa. The first of the two volumes, published on the occasion of the museum's 50th anniversary, consists of 47 scholarly contributions on Indian art and archaeology by a constellation of international scholars (x, 410 pp., 26 col. plates tipped in, followed by 594 b&w photos in 178 unnumbered pp., with 32 pp. rear section of advertisements, including additional 14 tipped in col. plates.) The second of the set is a felicitation volume for Rai Krishnadasa, who passed away just prior to its completion. A total of 53 scholarly papers are included, with focus on the fine arts and archaeology of India (xiv, 323 pp., 75 col. pl. tipped in, followed by 655 b&w photos in 162 unnumbered pp., with 40 pp. rear section of advertisements, including additional 12 tipped in col. plates.). Both volumes bound in beige linen. Traces of tape residue on endpapers, and a couple of internal pp. foxed due to contact with photo section front & end pages. All other pages pristine; overall both fine, unread copies. Text in English - a wealth of essential reference material on the ancient arts of India.
