Sein Werk, das erst in den letzten Jahren wiederentdeckt und systematisch aufgearbeitet wurde, weist ihn als einen der frühesten und bedeutendsten Chronisten einer Epoche aus, deren Kunst und Gesellschaft von den widersprüchlichen Phänomenen kleinbürgerlichen Wunschdenkens und erster Einbrüche der Industrialisierung in die heile Welt dörflicher Abgeschiedenheit geprägt waren. Um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts galt Loschwitz, wie die umliegenden Elbdörfer Blasewitz, Wachwitz und Pillnitz, wegen seiner landschaftlichen Schönheit als beliebter Künstlertreffpunkt. Auf diese Weise kam Kotzsch, dessen bescheidene Familienverhältnisse den Besuch einer Akademie nicht zugelassen hatten, mit namhaften Künstlern seiner Zeit in Berührung: Vor allem Ludwig Richter, der zeitweise in Kotzschs Elternhaus logierte und wichtige Aufzeichnungen zur Biographie des Photographen hinterließ, gehörte zum engeren Freundeskreis. Sommergäste in Loschwitz waren auch Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner und Wilhelm Raabe - Persönlichkeiten, die das Fluidum prägten und Kotzschs photographischen Blick auf Landschaft, Menschen und Leben seiner Heimat indirekt, aber nachhaltig beeinflußten. Neben der Idylle und der romantischen Beschaulichkeit werden auch der meist dürftige, harte Alltag der Dorfbewohner und gegen Ende des Jahrhunderts die Wandlungen der dörflichen Gemeinden in bevorzugte Villenvororte Dresdens sichtbar. Kotzschs Photographien - Landschafts-, Portrait- und Genreaufnahmen - können in ihrem historischen und ästhetischen Wert kaum überschätzt werden.
