Paperback. Condizione: New. Ukraine has often been called a laboratory for global challenges in the spheres of environment, information, and security. The site of the worst nuclear catastrophe in history, the primary target of the Kremlin's disinformation campaigns as well as the country to spark the collapse of the Soviet Union… and to stand up to its neo-imperialist successor: Ukraine has been the first to face and, at times, to set in motion processes with worldwide consequences. After Russia's full-scale invasion compromised the global system of security, the value of Ukrainian knowledge and experience can no longer be dismissed. The urgency to learn with and from Ukraine is now existential for the rest of the world. This unique collection presents essays, in English and Ukrainian translations, by emerging authors from Ukraine and the UK who employ cross-cultural dialog and the art of storytelling to open up Ukrainian perspectives on the challenges facing humanity worldwide. The volume's contributors are Olesya Khromeychuk, Sofia Cheliak, Kateryna Iakovlenko, Olena Kozar, Kris Michalowicz, Phoebe Page, Jonathon Turnbull, and Mstyslav Chernov. "If you want to understand the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine from the inside, read this vivid, moving, urgent collection of essays." -Charlotte Higgins, The Guardian "Moving, heartfelt and often deeply personal, these essays off er a compelling portrait of life in Ukraine under the shadow of war. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the reality of Russia's invasion and its terrible human consequences." -Luke Harding, The Guardian The editor: Sasha Dovzhyk completed her PhD in Comparative Literature at Birkbeck, University of London. In 2022-2023, she was Associate Lecturer in Ukrainian Literature at the School of Slavonic and East-European Studies, UCL. Since 2021, she is Special Projects Curator at the Ukrainian Institute in London. Her previous books include Decadent Writings of Aubrey Beardsley (ed. with Simon Wilson, MHRA 2022) and Ukrainian Cassandra: New Translations of Works by Lesia Ukrainka (Live Canon 2023). Her articles have been published in, among other outlets, Modernist Cultures, British Art Studies, the Oxford Handbook of Decadence, CNN, The Guardian, New Lines Mag, Los Angeles Review of Books, and The Ecologist. The foreword author: Dr Rory Finnin is Professor of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Cambridge.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Political revisionism is a world-wide and historical trend often defining the nature of international relations of a certain historical period. But today, it has become more important than ever before. The rise of China, aggressions of Russia, a growing number of states that have developed…or are developing nuclear weapons, the inability of the UN Security Council to handle the global security agenda, the AI revolution, mass migration, and climate change combine into a picture that is difficult to comprehend. And yet no systematic analysis exists explaining what is to expect in the global order under such extreme conditions of war, instability, and insecurity. Annually, around four thousand books on international relations are being published world-wide. This book seeks to fill the gap between a reality that is hard to explain and the theory that is no longer sufficient. Being a study of revisionism, it is itself a revisionist book. It revisits, discusses, and uncovers the novel meaning of many basic concepts used in theorizing about international relations as we know them. Some familiar concepts are merely getting outdated, others have proven to be wrong, while still others need to be revised to understand modern reality properly. The book draws lessons from the author's experience of practical diplomacy during 30 years as a senior Ukrainian diplomat with assignments in Tel Aviv, Washington, D.C., Ankara, and Tokyo. Political revisionism is reshaping global relations in an era marked by rising powers, nuclear threats, AI, migration, and climate change. Drawing on 30 years of diplomatic experience, the author revisits key concepts in international relations to provide a new understanding of todays complex and unstable world order. Paperback. Condizione: New. "Featuring a special section on Russian Foreign Policy Towards the 'Near Abroad' Issue 4,2 deals with Russias post-Maidan foreign policy towards the so-called near abroad, or the former Soviet states. This is an important and timely topic, as Russias policy perspectives have changed dramatically since… 2013/2014, as have those of its neighbors. The Kremlin today is paradoxically following an aggressive realist agenda that seeks to clearly delineate its sphere of influence in Europe and Eurasia while simultaneously attempting to promote soft-power and a historical-civilizational justification for its recent actions in Ukraine (and elsewhere). The result is an often perplexing amalgam of policy positions that are difficult to disentangle. The contributors to this special issue are all regional specialists based either in Europe or the United States. ".

Paperback. Condizione: New. Natalya Ryabinska calls into question the commonly held opinion that the problems with media reform and press freedom in former Soviet states merely stem from the cultural heritage of their communist (and pre-communist) past. Focusing on Ukraine, she argues that, in the period after the fall of commun…ism, peculiar new obstacles to media independence have arisen. They include the telltale structure of media ownership, with news reporting being concentrated in the hands of politically engaged business tycoons, the fuzzy and contradictory legislation of the media realm, and the informal institutions of political interference in mass media. The book analyzes interrelationships between politics, the economy, and media in Ukraine, especially their shadowy sides guided by private interests and informal institutions. Being embedded in comparative politics and post-communist media studies, it helps to understand the nature and workings of the Ukrainian media system situated in-between democracy and authoritarianism. It offers insights into the inner logic of Ukraines political system and institutional arrangement in the post-Soviet period. Based on empirical data of 19942013, this study also highlights many of the barriers to democratic reforms that have been persisting in Ukraine since the Revolution of Dignity of 20132014.

Paperback. Condizione: New. This innovative book offers a fresh perspective on the national work culture of Russia and the substantial role foreign institutional and cultural impact has had in shaping it. Russia's contemporary work culture is understood as a national system supplemented by new values and attitudes that have been… adopted through the mediation of foreign individuals and corporations or in response to the challenges of Western competition. It is argued that the foreign factor triggers change in the landscape of Russia's work culture, the scope of which depends on the type of influence. However, there is a certain core of the work culture that remains resistant to any external impact.

Paperback. Condizione: New. The Euromaidan protests highlighted Ukraine as a state between East and West European pathways. It became obvious that Ukraines search for identity and future is deeply rooted in historical fragmentations of the country which indicate Ukraines long-standing and multiple ties beyond its borders. In thi…s volume, distinguished scholars provide empirical analysis and theoretical reflections on Ukraines transnational embeddedness which surfaced with an unexpected intensity in the recent political conflict. The contributions focus on such phenomena as the role of international media and of diaspora communities in the Euromaidans aftermath, on the transnational roots of memories and the search for collective identity, and on transnational linkages of elites within Ukrainian political and economic regimes. The anthology demonstrates the theoretical and analytical value of the concept of transnationalism for studying the ambivalent processes of post-Soviet modernization.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The contributors to this book discuss the new conjunctions that have emerged between foreign policy events and politicized expressions of Russian nationalism since 2005. The 2008 war with Georgia, as well as conflicts with Ukraine and other East European countries over the memory of the Sov…iet Union, and the Russian interpretation of the 2005 French riots have all contributed to reinforcing narratives of Russia as a fortress surrounded by aggressive forces, in the West and CIS. This narrative has found support not only in state structures, but also within the larger public. It has been especially salient for some nationalist youth movements, including both pro-Kremlin organizations, such as "Nashi," and extra-systemic groups, such as those of the skinheads. These various actors each have their own specific agendas; they employ different modes of public action, and receive unequal recognition from other segments of society. Yet many of them expose a reading of certain foreign policy events which is roughly similar to that of various state structures. These and related phenomena are analyzed, interpreted and contextualized in papers by Luke March, Igor Torbakov, Jussi Lassila, Marlene Laruelle, and Lukasz Jurczyszyn. This work discusses the new conjunctions that have emerged between foreign policy events and politicized expressions of Russian nationalism since 2005. Paperback. Condizione: New. This astonishing book explores the delusional imaginings of Russia's past by the pseudo-scientific 'Alternative History' movement. Despite the chaotic collapse of two empires in the last century, Russia's glorious imperial past continues to inspire millions. The lively movement of 'Alternative History…', diligently re-writing Russia's past and 'rediscovering' its hidden greatness, has been growing dramatically since the collapse of Communism in 1991. Virtually unknown in the West, these pseudo-historians have published best-selling books, attracted widespread media attention, and are a prominent voice in Internet discussions about Russian and world history. Alternative History claims that Russia is much older than Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome; that the medieval Mongol Empire was in fact a Slav-Turk world empire; and that, in the twentieth century, duplicitous foreign powers stabbed Russia in the back and stole its empire. For its followers the key to Russia's greatness in the future lies in ensuring that Russians understand the true wealth of their past. Alternative history has become a popular therapy for Russians still coming to terms with the reality of Post-Soviet life. It is one of the forces shaping a new Russian nationalism and an important factor in the geopolitics of the twenty-first century.
