L'auteur, Jean-Luc Angrand est issu de la plus ancienne minorité métisse d'Afrique qui naquit au Sénégal au XVIe siècle avec l'arrivée des premiers explorateurs du prince Henri le navigateur, sur la petite côte du Sénégal ; souvent des juifs portugais. Il retrace dans "Céleste ou le temps des signares" la période matriarcale de cette minorité, appelée "temps des signares". Les signares, maîtresses-femmes métisses, commencent leur règne au XVIIe siècle qui s'achèvera avec le début de la colonisation au XIXe siècle et l'application du terrible code civil français qui transformera les filles des fières matriarches des comptoirs du Sénégal (Gorée et Saint-Louis) en femme mineur à vie, à la façon de la métropole. Les Signares, réputées pour leurs beautés envoûtantes et leurs habilités au commerce, amassèrent des fortunes colossales et développèrent un art de vivre somptueux durant trois siècles.
