Samuel Merrill (1822-1899) was the seventh governor of Iowa from 1868-1872, as well as an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. Titled "Messages and Inaugurals of the Iowa Governors from 1846 to 1874" (actually to 1876, not 1874 as indicated in title). Contains a total of 31 SEPARATE MESSAGES/INAUGURALS/SPEECHES (almost 600 pages) all bound together in the one volume. Various imprints. Begins with (#1) Message of Governor James Clarke to the First General Assembly of the State of Iowa, Dec. 1846 (14pp). Followed by 30 additional messages/speeches to the State of Iowa (some multiple) by the following: Samuel Merrill; James Clarke; Ansel Briggs; Stephen Hempstead; James W. Grimes; Ralph P. Lowe; Samuel J. Kirkwood; William M. Stone; & Cyrus C. Carpenter (full details with dates supplied on demand). Contains some sporadic manuscript details, mostly indicating Governors & dates. Bound in the original gilt-stamped leather boards, professionally rebacked with maroon buckram spine, with original endpapers bound in. Spine gilt-lettered with "Iowa Governors' Messages". Slight handling wear, mild foxing, hinges reinforced from inside (holding tight), otherwise a VERY GOOD nice clean solid leatherbound copy. A total of 597 pages of text, plus dividing blanks.
