Hij en zijn familie zochten in Nederlands-Indië hun fortuin, maar kwamen naast gelukkige momenten rampspoed en ongeluk tegen.Bram Waanders ziet n…a een leerzame carrière in het leger bij de verbindingstak van de genie een mogelijkheid om bij de Indische Post-, Telegraaf- en Telefoondienst te gaan werken. De Nederlandse regering ging Indië meer zien dan een wingewest en investeerde in telefonie en infrastructuur. Hoewel dit een grote verandering was, bleven tussen en binnen de Indische bevolkingsgroepen grote ongelijkheden bestaan. Ongelijkheid zag Bram ook binnen zijn beroepsgroep. Hij maakte zich hard om hier actief iets tegen te doen: in de vakbond, de pers en de politiek. De crisis in de jaren '30 verergerde de situatie, maar gaf hem ook een reden om een paar tandjes bij te zetten. Het opkomende ultranationalisme en fascisme in Europa en Azië waren van een compleet andere aard; deze zouden het bestaan en de vrijheid in de kolonie ernstig gaan bedreigen. Voor Bram en zijn familie zouden de gevolgen dramatisch blijken. Anton Waanders (1970) is sinds 1997 bezig met het onderzoeken van familie-geschiedenis en heeft inmiddels verschillende genealogische werken op zijn naam staan. Met zijn nieuwste boek is hij een andere weg ingeslagen door een verhalende biografie te schrijven. Aan de hand van diverse bronnen uit onder andere het Nationaal Archief, de Koninklijke Bibliotheek en familiecollecties is het leven van Bram Waanders en zijn familie gereconstrueerd. Op het herinneringsmonument voor de gevallenen van de Verbindingsdienst, dat in de jaren '90 onthuld werd, had Bram eigenlijk vermeld moeten staan, maar kwam hierop niet voor. Waanders is erin geslaagd deze omissie ruimschoots te herstellen door met dit verhaal een gezicht te geven aan de vergeten neef van zijn opa en zijn Indische familieleden.
