Three books of the collected works, which are characterized as "school-discussion problems and solutions on nature," are commonly cited as Alexander's Quaestiones. The first book of the Quaestiones and the first half of the second book, here translate are concerned with physics metaphysics, psychology, divine providence inspired by discussions of Aristotle's works among Alexander and associates of his, the Quaestiones illuminate the functioning of a philosophical school in the early third century A. D. In their emphasis on resolving apparent anomalies and contradictions, they exemplity the process by which Aristotle's thought came to be regarded as "Aristotelianism," andthey reveal the influence of the doctrines of Hellenistic philosophy The translation of some of these first into Arabic and then into Latin played an important role in the transmission of ancient Greek philosophy to the medieval world. Of more than historical interest, Alexander's Quaestiones cast light on Aristotle's views on such issues as the problemofuniversals and the relation between form and matter. Dooley. ; Ancient Commentators On Aristotle; 234 pages; Aristotle was a systematic writer who often cross-referred to the definitions of terms given elsewhere in his work. Book 5 of the Metaphysics is important because it consists of definitions of the main uses of key terms in Aristotle's philosophy, and it is extremely valuable to have a commentary on this important text by Alexander of Aphrodisias, the leading commentator of his school. Alexander provides a detailed commentary on all of the thirty terms analysed in Book 5, weighing alternative interpretations of what Aristotle says one against another, defending Peripatetic views against actual and possible criticisms, and attempting to integrate what is said in Book 5 into the context of the Metaphysics as a whole. 155.96 X 13.34 X 9.21 millimeters.…
