Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. Limited Edition. " Although these drawings were made more than half a century ago, the idea that they might be made into a book is less than a year old as I write and the texts and references and introductory pieces have been researched and written during that time. I wa…s an art student in New York City when I dipped a brush in Indian ink and these drawings emerged in quick succession. What I remember most clearly about that period is a sense of freedom and excitement. d'Arbeloff, Natalie (illustratore). Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. . [Descriptive materials from the colophon pages:] Fungus & Curmudgeonly was written in 1976 and performed for the first time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that year then in Stratford-upon-Avon at the Macbeth Room, Shakespeare Hotel, in summer 1977. This first edition is de…signed, illustrated and produced by Natalia d Arbeloff. The separate etchings, as well as the relief and intaglio images with the text, were printed by the artist on an etching press. Calligraphy for the text is by Sally Johnson, written in red and black ink on vellum for the Unique Copy; the photo-litho printed by Atelier Rosenstiel on BFK Rives for the rest of the edition. The wooden triptych boxes were designed by NdA and made by Dorset Bookbinding Co. A reading of the play, produced for the cassettes which accompany each copy of the book, was recorded on October 4th, 1979 at Elephant Recording Studio, London, with Charles Turner in the role of Fungus and Jack Le White as Curmudgeonly, directed by NdA. Electronic sound-effects on synthesizer by Steve Baker. Cassette copies by Tam Studio. Photos of actors by Peg Mills. A Unique Copy was commissioned by Colin Franklin, with the text written on vellum. This copy includes original drawings, preparatory sketches, proofs, etc. and is contained in a wooden box cabinet made by Derek Henden with a Cold-Cast Bronze relief sculpture by Derek Norman on the lid. Vellum binding by Jenny Lindsay. [Colophon:] The edition of 50 copies, all numbered and signed by author and artist, is divided as follows: A-E: Hors Commerce. I-X: In wooden triptych box containing the illustrated text, cloth-bound, plus cassette and 6 loose etchings on Arches Buff [our copy is one of these 10]. 1-10: The illustrated text, without the separate etchings. Bindings created by Designer Bookbinders, including cassette. 11-35: The illustrated text, cloth-bound, in slipcase including cassette. There is also a separate edition of 20 single prints of 5 of the etchings. This is copy No. V [signed:] NdArbeloff Simon Meyerson [-] . Size of closed wooden triptych box: 11 1/2" x 13" x 2" (thick); size of inserted, printed book: 5 1/4" x 12 3/8", 35pp.; with 5 intaglio etchings printed in gray, blue & green shades & another etching in white & black & similar design printed endpapers & flyleaves; colophon pages with embossed NdA pressmark. Inserted cassette tape in plastic case; six separate etchings, inserted on a sliding tray (approx. image size: 6 1/4" x 8", each is numbered & initialed: 4/10 V NdA 80). The wooden triptych box is constructed so the bound book & cassette tape in plastic case are fitted into compartments in the front covers; when the covers are opened out, a central recessed frame exposes the first of 6 separate colored etchings, the first with the title; these are inserted into a compartment in the upper back cover edge of the box and are held on a sliding tray, which has a cloth pull at the top. The book is bound in black cloth with titles, etc. stamped in dark blue on spine & with dark blue abstract designs on the covers; endpapers are also in a similar blue on black. Box is covered with a purple/brownish paper, and with a design printed in tan on lighter blue paper, which is mounted to the front covers. Brass hinges along the outer sides of the box. Outer edges of purple/brownish paper on the box show some slight wear & rubbing, else this set (book, etchings & tape) is in fine condition. Only ten were produced in this deluxe format. Scan shows the opened front of the box with a part of the "title" separate etching exposed & closed side of box with mounted design paper on front. Postage may be extra on this item.
