Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-209 210-211: ads [212: blank], original full leather, spine panel stamped in gold, floral patterned endpapers. First edition. A collection of short fiction, including whimsical and weird tales. Arthur Albert Dawson Bayldon (1865-1958), born in Leeds, England, arrived in Australia in 1889. Best known for his bush ballads, this is his only published work of fiction. "The tendency to sensational effects in the book of stories is offset by careful circumstantial support. This gives an authentic quality to the Australian items, which, comprising more than half the contents, have an atmospheric variety illustration by the arid inland of 'Thirst,' the desolation of a copper-mining area in 'Little Paul,' and life afloat on a pearling lugger in 'Benson's Flutter for a Fortune.'" - Miller and Macartney (1956), p. 53. Larnach, Materials Towards a Checklist of Australian Fantasy to 1937 (1950), p. 9. Stone, Notes on Australian Science Fiction, p. 164. Front and rear covers loose, spine perished, a binding copy.
