Widespread throughout Latin America, susto is a folk illness associated with a broad array of symptoms. It is considered by susceptible populations to be a sickness caused by the separation of soul and body which is precipitated by a supernatural force. Most studies of culture-bound diseases have relied on descriptive approaches that focus on pathologies derived from medical textbooks. This study takes an interdisciplinary approach, looking for explanations of susto in the interaction of social, physiological, and psychological factors.

First edition. 4 illnesses which are conceptually bound together by Mexican-Americans of rural, border origin are described: fallen fontanel, evil eye, shock, and "empacho." The more credulous hold that only people of Mexican background are afflicted and that the illnesses can only be understood or treated in traditional ways, not by technically trained physicians. These attitudes and those toward sorcery are explained by anxiety about adoption of Anglo-American values. 3 of these illnesses "function to sustain some of the dominant values of the Mexican-American culture." The Epidemiology of a Folk Illness: Susto In Hispanic America is an exploratory article seeks to assess the extent to which folk illness may be subjected to epidemiological studies, as are other illnesses. It is a working assumption of this paper that, in general, folk-illness phenomena are indeed amenable to such investigation if one is aware of especial methodological problems which are concomitants of such research. A presentation of some of these general problems is followed by an examination of the Hispanic-American folk illness which I refer to as susto. Nagual , Witch and Sorcerer in a Quiche Village One of the oldest war horses in the Middle Americanist's stable is a semantically skittish creature named Nagual. This curious beast has a respectable ancient pedigree in the literature on Middle America, references to it being encountered in early Spanish historical and ecclesiastical writings.
