Retains the full Japanese Taisho-era colophon of the original Tokyo is…sue (printed Feb. 15, 1922; issued Feb. 20, 1922; sales office Nishi-Sugamo; printer Koishikawa), together with a Korean distribution notice by the Youth Buddhist Education Association dated Buddhist Era 2522 (April 1979). Classical Chinese text in vertical double-column kanbun setting. Front blank with a handsome brush inscription and red name seal; later neat date "3-20-92" on a rear blank with owner's name. Internally clean; paper shows the even, intentional stock toning typical of the series. Boards bright with only light shelf evidence; no spotting. A solid, study-worthy copy of a key primary source for East Asian Yogācāra thought, uncommon with both the original Tokyo colophon and the 1979 Korean association leaf present.

Description 150pp. In a neat and compact 17th century hand, text within ruled frame, frontispieces drawn in ink, with several tables and diagrams within the text, capitals larger. All executed in the same hand in brown ink, 'Iesu' in lighter ink. Inscription of 'M William Stephens' to frontispie…ce verso and free endpaper. Binding Later black morocco binding covers with ornamental floral roll gilt tooling and dentelle frame; spine with raised bands, five compartments with delicate gilt pointillé and arabesques; board edges and edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Condition In very good condition, with only light browning and slight wear on page edges. Margins trimmed closely. The main work copied in this manuscript was originally printed by Parsons' press in Rouen. This is an abridged copy, from a book which probably lacked pages 33-40, as these pages have been left blank with the cutoffs at the end and beginning of the original pages. Comparable Manuscripts While a comparable miniature manuscript prayer book exists in the Huntington Library (Shrewsbury Manuscript), that example is incomplete (approx. 26 pages) and differs in character. Later printed editions of Flinton's Manual of Prayers, including the 1671 Antwerp edition, are themselves of notable rarity and appear only sporadically on the market. Provenance 1. The debate reached a peak in 1566 with the publication of Robert Crowley's A Briefe Discourse Against the Outwarde Apparel of the Popishe Church to which… this is a response attributed to Archbishop Matthew Parker (1504-1575). The second work includes correspondence between the Bish op John Hopper (c.1495-1555), the theologian Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562), and the Protestant reformer Martin Bucer (1491-1551). Description 84pp. Collation: *1-*64, *72, A-D4 Two works in one, likely printed together, usually found together. Black letter, many woodcut initials (the first 'S' woodcut block printed upside-down) and manicules, red edges, ink inscription in an old hand to 2*2 "The solicitours of these orders were bluddy persecutours". Title browned, margins frayed and small portion of restoration at gutter, a few ff. closely shaved, D1-D4 with restoration and repair to upper corner and fore-margin with some loss to text. Bound with extensive handwritten extracts from John Hooper's seven sermons (1550), plus extensive notes on other works linked to the vestments controversy and catalogue cut outs, written in a late 19th century hand. Binding - 19th century blindstamped sheepskin, gilt lettering to spine; edges worn. Provenance 1. Bt. at Egerton's, Whitehall, 1801 (ink inscription to foot o f title). 2. M. H.
