"It is now nearly five years since this book was published for the first time in French, which is my mother tongue and the one in which I naturally prefer to write. Since 1960 history has moved fast in the Indian Ocean area. I have expanded the chronology at the end to include the most significant happenings during these last five years, but I think it is too early yet to revise my views on the possibility of an Indian Ocean community. This is why I did not feel like rewriting the final pages and introducing a pessimistic note which China's aggression against India, the strained relations between Indonesia and Malaysia, and the Zanzibar affair might perhaps justify." ---- from Author's Preface to the English Edition.
