Having fallen in love and married, he keeps his nuptials secret, settling with his wife, Edith, a short distance out of New York City. Finding time hanging heavy on his hands, Dick occupies himself by writing a play, hoping to win a prize offered for the best new work. The play is complete, but Dick has yet to revise the first act. Before he can do so, his uncle arrives for a visit. Dick decides he must play the part of a bachelor to avoid discovery and sends his wife to town on an errand, with great difficulty preventing his uncle from seeing her. Soon after, George Merrigale, an old friend of Dick's, arrives from town to spend the day. Seeing a photograph of Edith, he inquires who the original is, and Dick informs him that it's a photograph of the maid. He keeps up this deception throughout, but Merrigale overhears a remark that Harris, the manservant, has made, and thinks Dick is not only married to his maid but has another wife as well. He tells this to Meander, who is furious. Following an interview with Edith, whom he does not recognize, thinking she is the other woman, Meander dismisses his own wife and believes Edith to be Meander's wife. Edith assists him in making peace with Mrs. Meander, and she is so sorry for mistrusting Dick that she willingly forgives him. Meander also, although blaming Dick, forgives him for Edith's sake, whom he pronounces a jewel. He tells Dick to continue writing plays as an amusement if he needs extra money, but to draw upon him "Between the Acts."
