The Bals were stationed at Beale two and a half years. Mrs Bal edited The Foothills Flier at Beale. Divided into sections: The Early Days (briefly discusses the natural history, early Indian dwellers, old roads and trails, mining, the goldfields, and more. The second section, Beale Goes to War begins with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and tells of German POWs kept there, of training, and the beginnings of Beale Air Force Base. The final sections, Guarding the Peace tells of SAC taking over; more uses for Beale; a Two-Wing Base, and more.
