Als Baldus de Ubaldis 1527 in Perugia das Licht der Welt erblickte, begann Bartolus de Saxoferrato, sein späterer Lehrer, gerade sein Rechtsstudium an der Universität zu Perugia.Zu Bartolus entwickelte Baldus ein besonderes Verhältnis, er war sein Kollege, aber auch sein Konkurrent.Und Baldus blieb bis zum Tode von Bartolus im Jahre 1357 Rechtslehrer in Perugia, wechselte jedoch noch in dessen Todesjahr nur für ein Jahr an die Universität in Pisa. Baldus de Ubaldis war hochbegabt, grenzenlos selbstbewusst, auch geldgierig, ehrgeizig und machtbewusst. Er war ein reicher und mächtiger Jurist, der die Rechtslehrer, die Juristen allgemein in einen neuen Abschnitt der Rechtswissenschaft führte. Aber auch das Salär der Professoren wuchs stetig an, weil die Universitätsstädte nicht gerade geringe Einnahmen hatten, wenn ein berühmter Rechtslehrer die Juristenfakultät schmückte. Baldus de Ubaldis gründete eine Juristendynastie. Schon seine beiden jüngeren Brüder Angelus (geboren 1528) und Petrus folgten ihrem großen Vorbild Baldus und studierten, abweichend vom Vater, der Medicus war, ebenfalls in Perugia Rechtswissenschaften. Auch die Söhne der drei wurden großteils Juristen. Bei Baldus waren es die Zwillingssöhne Johannes Zenobus (legum doctor) und Franciscus sowie der älteste Sohn Bartholomaeus, der auch doctor legum wurde. Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts meldet sich ein Ururenkel von Petrus de Ubaldis mit einer Apologie auf Baldus de Ubaldis, die von dem in der Rechtsgeschichte bekannten Rechtslehrer in Perugia Ioannes Paulus Lancelottus verfasst wurde. Es geht um den Verdacht, dass Baldus eine Digestenhandschrift gefälscht habe, um seine Interpretation gegenüber Bartolus durchzusetzen. Diese Fabel ist schon vom feinsinnigen Antonius Augustinus(1516-1586), der erste, der vor dem Druck in den Codex Florentinus einsehen durfte, entkräftet und widerlegt worden, aber selbst Savigny meint, sich nochmals bemühen zu müssen, den Wahrheitsgehalt dieser Mär zu entlarven. Sie taucht dann nochmals in eher alberner Weise in einem bekannten Lexikon europäischer Juristen auf, währendes das große Werk von Lange/Kriechbaum über die Kommentatoren diese Seitenhiebe gegen Baldus gar nic ht mehr erwähnt. Es sind Metaphern zu Baldus, der berühmt und mächtig war, und so eine Reihe von Gegnern, Kritikern, ja Feinde um sich sammelte. Zudem hatte er ein sehr distanziertes Verhältnis zu Bartolus, über den er auch spöttelte, dieser sei, jedenfalls was seine Rechtsgutachten betrifft, ein "Doctorellus": Bartolus est unus Doctorellus, & quod de talibus Doctorelis non est curandum in iudicando. Er spricht Bartolus bei der Abfassung von Konsilien gar Urteilskraft ab.
