Paperback or Softback. Condizione: New. The Journal Of A Disappointed Man. Book.

Paperback. Condizione: New. The young naturalist W. N. P. Barbellion described this remarkably candid record of living with multiple sclerosis as 'a study in the nude'. It begins as an ambitious teenager's notes on the natural world, and then, following his diagnosis at the age of twenty-six, transforms into a deeply moving account of battling the disease. His prose is full of humour and fierce intelligence, and combines a passion for life with clear-sighted reflections on the nature of death. Barbellion selected and edited this manuscript himself in 1917, adding a fictional editor's note announcing his own demise. This Penguin Classics edition includes 'The Last Diary', which covers the period between submission of the manuscript and Barbellion's actual death in 1919. …

Paperback. Condizione: New. Published shortly before the author's death in 1919, this remarkable memoir addresses struggles with poverty, inadequate education, and the creeping paralysis of multiple sclerosis. Yet Barbellion still manages to write with uplifting eloquence and passion of his love for family, natural history, music, and literature. Told with a thoroughly modern voice, the unjustly overlooked Journal is reprinted here with its posthumous successor, A Last Diary. Introduction by H. G. Wells.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. A LAST DIARY BY W.N.P. BARBELLION. I am pleased to be able to offer a nice copy of: A Last Diary, by W.N.P. Barbellion, a sequel to his earlier work The Journal of a Disappointed Man. Although the Preface of this book (about 48 pages in length), written by his brother, Arthur J. Cummings, is extensive and explains the Author and his work, I was also able to find a short reference to him on Wikipedia, a portion of which I cite here for your fuller information: Wilhelm Nero Pilate Barbellion was the nom-de-plume of Bruce Frederick Cummings (7 September 1889 22 October 1919), an English diarist who was responsible for The Journal of a Disappointed Man. It has been called "among the most moving diaries ever created," and is considered a classic of English Literature. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ½ inches, 148 pages) was published by George H. Doran Company of New York, undated. The book is bound in a tan tweed cloth with a paper paste-down title panel on the spine. Words only, no illustrations! Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are slightly dust-dulled but without any real soiling with the exception of what appears to be a small ink smudge on the paper title label of the spine. The boards are barely bumped. Inside, I believe someone has removed the first blank page as the book now opens with the half-title page and one can see a torn edge in the gutter. The endpapers are foxed, probably from the effect of the binding glues but fortunately this does not extend into the interior pages. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
