Couple of pieces of D/J. missing. Few subjects have evoked so much mediocre verse as had man's reaction to the animal world. Affection for and admiration of certain animals, and awe at the 'brute' characteristics of others, are facile emotions, experienced by nearly all men, few of whom, however, have the true poetic feeling or power of expression. Derek Gilpin Barnes has, in this book, compiled an unusual and refreshing anthology of animal poetry - as distinct from verse. Thanks to wide reading, a critical selective faculty and an untarnished appreciation of animals as animals, he has made this a fine and exciting book. This vivid anthology has an instant appeal to every animal lover, whether a love of poetry or not.
