Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Starting out as a painter, Bartholomé turned towards sculpture in 1887 when he created a stirring figure for his wife's grave, before creating his masterpiece, the cenotaph at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, on which he worked from 1889 to 1899. - Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
