Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Near Fine. A lustrous alabaster sculpture of a pensive young girl concentrating on the wide ABC she's holding with one hand. With light from behind, the sculpture has an iridescent glow, as if the light were coming from within. The girl has flawless features, and notwithstanding her blouse or dress has fallen off a s…houlder, we dare say there is nothing erotic about it. Rather, it conveys her absorption. The artist did other sculptures of the same girl doing other things. We are not aware of any other sculptures by this artist that are the same. The sculpture, with its green marble base, is about 23 cm tall, and the base is 18 by 10 cm. Without the base -- the actual sculpture -- is about 20.5 cm tall. Battiglia, or Battaglia, was a prolific sculptor based in Florence at the turn-of-the-century, and we can infer, based on auction records and the like, that he probably sold primarily to tourists in the last gasp of the Grand Tour tradition. Generally his name is given as Battaglia, but his name is etched into the alabaster here as "E. Battiglia". This spelling is found on other sculptures by him that are then credited to "Battaglia". We haven't as yet been able to find out much about the artist, notwithstanding that his work has at times commanded very hefty prices, and undoubtedly there is biographical information to plumb. This is also not the type of item we typically handle so we are at a loss to peg its condition with any precision. We are confident there are no major issues, but in the interest of being conservative, we will grade it as Near Fine.
