Drawing extensively upon official records, correspondence and eyewitness testimony, Beamish traces the Legion from its creation in 1803 to its disbandment following the final defeat of Napoleon.The King's German Legion arose directly from the French occupation of Hanover. With the Hanoverian Army dissolved, officers and men escaped to Britain, where George III authorised the formation of German units in British service. What began as an emergency measure rapidly developed into a formidable combined-arms force comprising line and light infantry, cavalry, artillery and engineers. More than 28,000 men passed through its ranks during its existence, and the Legion earned an exceptional reputation for discipline, professionalism and fighting ability.Volume I follows the KGL from its formation through its early expeditions and into the Peninsular War.
