Back cover reproduces an 1892 photograph of famed Cahuilla Chief Cabezon, the younger. Mild surface wear to covers; staple bound, binding tight; interior pages clean and unmarked. Small retailer sticker at rear cover lower right from Desert Map & Aerial Photo, Palm Desert.First in the Malki Museum Brochure series, this popular pamphlet by anthropologist Lowell John Bean (co-founder of the Malki Museum and longtime scholar of Cahuilla ethnography) and University of California, Riverside historian Harry W. Lawton was originally issued in February 1965 to introduce visitors to the Malki Museum on the Morongo Indian Reservation; here in its Seventh Revised Printing of January 1997. Sections cover a "Welcome to Malki Museum" overview; the history of the Cahuilla from first contact with the 1775-76 expedition of Juan Bautista de Anza through the 1863 smallpox epidemic and the establishment of the Morongo Reservation; Cahuilla culture and artistic expression (basketry, pottery, petroglyphs, body painting); Cahuilla architecture (the kish dwelling, ceremonial houses, brush shelters); trade routes connecting inland Cahuilla territory to the coast, the San Gorgonio Pass peoples, and the Colorado River groups; Cahuilla weapons and bow technology; and Cahuilla clothing.
