[Bi shop John C.] Patteson bluntly denounced blackbirding as a slave trade and fought it. The slave traders,both in reprisal and asan effective means of t aking captives, disguised their ships as the Bishop's Southern Cross or tol d the people that their friend the Bishop was on board, and then seized the unsuspecting islanders.
