VG orig. beige cloth in brown dj. 133 p.; 21 cm. Contents: I The past -- II Present critics -- III The gospel of reconciliation -- IV The ministry of reconciliation -- V Mission and peace today -- VI Preaching peace and makin g peace. -- `The Peace Churches called a conference on "The Christian Missi on and the Peace Witness." It was held at Germantown, Ohio, on March 9-11, 1962, and sponsored by the mission, service, and peace agencies of the seve ral denominations of the Mennonites, Friends, and the Church of the Brethre n. The writer was asked to present the opening address. An effort to write a forty-minute address produced this essay.Peace is the burning concern of millions of persons to whom the younger churches and the missionaries are e ndeavoring to proclaim the gospel today.Peace in allits meanings and facets has from the beginning been a major objective of the Christian apostolate, because the vertical reconciliation of men with God in Jesus Christ is man ifested on earth in the horizontal reconciliation of men with men.' (p. 5) -- `"Black-birding" or kidnapping natives under the pretense of indenturing them as servants was the source of strife and bloodshed in Melanesia. [Bi shop John C.] Patteson bluntly denounced blackbirding as a slave trade and fought it. The slave traders, both in reprisal and asan effective means of t aking captives, disguised their ships as the Bishop's Southern Cross or tol d the people that their friend the Bishop was on board, and then seized the unsuspecting islanders. When Patteson visited Nukapu in 1871 after the mur der of five natives, he was slain in revenge. English sentiment was aroused (p. 20 f.). Binding is Hardcover.

Delimitation of territory and non-interference: comity in India -- IV. Comity as an aid in evangelization: territorial division in China -- V. Comity through advance planning -- VI. Stress, strain, and problems -- Bibliography -- Index. -- `Those Anglican missionaries, following Claudius Buchanan, who first discovered the Syrian Orthodox Christians of Malabar on the southwest coast of India wanted to help them recover from the havoc wrought by the drastic interference of the Church of Rome and the Portuguese authorities in their affairs through attempted subjugation. Evangelical cells planted among them would bring revival. The separation of some of them into an Anglican community, which eventually occurred, was not the original intention. Similarly Protestant missionary action in the Near East was just as free of an aim to proselytize. The pioneer missionaries and the directors of their societies and boards had caught the same vision as Ramon Lull had seen it in the thirteenth century: those ancient churches would be revived, become again obedient to the missionary imperative, and then would themsleves evangelize the Muslims with an effectiveness that Westerners could never hope to have.'
