De bijdragen werden geschreven door specialisten en gaan over o.m. boek en bibliotheek bij de Grieken en bij de Romeinen, de overlevering van de klassieke teksten tijdens de Middeleeuwen, de opkomst van de drukpers, vertalingen van klassieke auteurs naar het Nederlands sinds 1800, populariteit van de Oudheid in moderne genres zoals romans, jeugdboeken, theater, film en strips. Tussendoor zijn er nog korte stukjes over o.m. de bibliotheken van Alexandrië, Celsus en Augustus, het uitzicht van een bibliotheek in de Oudheid, Homerus, Aristoteles, lezen en voordragen in de Oudheid, censuur in Athene, e.d.m. . Zoals men uit deze opsomming kan opmaken een rijk gevarieerde inhoud met onderwerpen die vaak niet of erg beperkt aan bod komen in overzichtswerken over de klassieke Oudheid.
