An attractive collection of chromolithographs, suited to display. The plates are all in good condition, laid down on the aged and sometimes damaged leaves of a small 4to (17 x 21 cm) album with good tight bevelled-edged binding in dark brown cloth, on which an embossed stylized pattern of foliage and two storks is printed in bla…ck with the word 'ALBUM' on the front cover and blind-stamped on the back cover. The album has an ornate title page, printed in red, with illustration of flowers, branches and a butterfly, together with the word 'Album' and publishers' details. The firm's binder's ticket ('M. W. & CO. / LONDON', 'No. 6192) is at the foot of the rear pastedown. The 36 chromolithographs, each printed on 6.25 x 10.5 cm pieces of white card, are arranged side-by-side in pairs on the rectos of 18 leaves. 22 of the cards are captioned in black copperplate: 1 Adiantum Fern; 1 Birch; 2 Elm; 1 Horn Beam; 8 Maple; 3 Oak; 1 Pear & Plum; 1 Raspberry; 1 Red Maple; 1 Sassafras; 1 Wood-bine; 1 Whortlebury. In 1874 Marcus Ward & Co. produced a volume titled 'Plants: their natural growth and ornamental treatment', but the 44 leaves of plates do not correspond to the present collection. Colourful and effective illustrations of leaves with no background illustration, the white of the card nicely setting off the illustration. See Image.

From the papers of Sylvia and Robert Lynd. A scarce item: five copies on JISC. In NLI, but not in the British Library. Bigger, a notable antiquary and republican (see Dictionary of Irish Biography), is the friend to whom Sir Roger Casement entrusted the 'black box' of incriminating documents, which Bigger destroyed after Casemen…t's execution. 12pp, 16mo. Stapled. In good condition, lightly aged, with lightly-rusted staples. Note on verso of title: 'These noble patriotic words, by a great Ulsterman, are here again printed for his fellow countrymen, particularly for those of his own Province, to guide, direct, and strengthen them in their nationality.' Two-page introduction by 'FRANCIS JOSEPH BIGGER / Ardrigh Belfast / Bealtaine 1911'. Drophead title, p.3: 'Dr. Drennan and the Union. / The Founders of Belfast and that Measure. / Noble Language and Lofty Thoughts.' Drennan's 'Protest against a union with Great Britain' (pp.5-10) is reprinted from 1810. Contemporary report printed on pp.11-12, with note: 'At the time Dr. Drennan was penning his Protest a very important meeting was held in Dublin on the National holiday, of which the following is an account. We have no doubt that it had the Doctor's full sympathy, if he was not present at it'.
