As the preface to Belford's history notes, this is a somewhat unusual approach to history, presenting a record of events from AD 432 to the present as a chronology of events means "that the work will never become…antiquated" as the future "will render necessary only the addition of the years as they pass, so as to keep the work up to date." The reader is also assured the book "is not a mere political record; but inventions, discoveries, and financial, economical, scientific, art and literary matters, and the deaths of important personages, are noted." For this copy, history ceased in 1886 after 272 pages of closely detailed record-keeping, with numerous black & white illustrations and a list of "Prinicpal Contents" beginning with Prehistory and ending with the death of Ulysses S. Grant. 5 x 7 1/2", the boards, paper-covered in an imitation tree-calf leather design, show considerable wear; all four corners are bumped, with the paper worn through; the spine ends are chipped. The front board is partially detached, with about two-thirds of the outside hinge separated from the spine; the inside front hinge is cracked about a quarter of the way down with the rest holding firmly. The back board's hinges are in much better condition with only a small piece of the outside hinge detached. The text block remains tight and square. The text itself is clean and unmarked, though quite age-tanned, with some minimal and occasional staining, which has not affected legibility. Overall, a more-than-decent copy of an interesting 19th century history.
