Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: very good. First Edition. A book of supreme importance in the history of physics. Had Bell lived, he would almost certainly have won the Nobel Prize for the papers collected here. This is the only book published in Bell's lifetime and this is the only signed/inscribed copy I have seen -- none recorded at auction. First edition (1988) inscribed in 1989, the year before his death, by John Bell to Marie Galbraith. Mrs. Galbraith was the wife of Evan Galbraith, the American ambassador to France under Ronald Reagan and this is from their recently dispersed estate. Following the death of a daughter at age 6, Mrs. Galbraith became consumed with reading about medicine and science. She was an enthusiast of alternative medicines (helping to create the Foundation for Alternative and Integrative Medicine) and UFOs. Mrs. Galbraith likely sought out J.S. Bell with the hope that quantum theory might support her quest for evidence of UFOs. As such, a fun association. In regard to scarcity: Bell passed away within two years of publication of Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics. The book itself was published as an expensive academic title -- with no expectation of wide distribution -- Bell became famous posthumously. Thus, there are likely vanishingly few inscribed copies of this essential book. Jacket in nice condition, minor edge wear -- VG or VG+. The book has some neat pencil underlining/notes in two chapters. A clean tight copy with a very rare inscription.
