Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First. First edition. Paris: Gilles Corrozet, 1553. Quarto (7 ¾" x 5 7/8", 198mm x 149mm). [Full collation available.] 40 leaves, foll. [8] (title, privilege, 3pp. dedication, 3pp. preface, contents, 6pp. index, blank) 1-32. With eight woodcut illustrations integral with the text. Bound in modern sti…ff marbled paper wrappers. Moderately and evenly tanned. Worming A1-G1, both to the gutter and to the fore, albeit largely affecting side-notes. Corrozet's printer's device upside-down to the title-page. Pierre Belon du Mans (the protégé of the Bishop of Le Mans (Latin "Cenomanus"), whence the sobriquet; 1517-1564) is the father of comparative anatomy in the modern era. He was skilled not only in biology but in attaching himself to powerful patrons; as apothecary to Cardinal François de Tournon he traveled in the eastern Mediterranean 1546-1549. There he will have been exposed to the evergreen trees for which the Holy Land is famed. These trees (notably Thuja, arborvitae) were also brought to France from North America. In the present slim volume, Belon defines the "conifer" (literally "cone-bearer") as a class for the first time. The importance of Coniferae -- Belon illustrates the cedar, spruce, pine, pinaster (maritime pine), larch (a deciduous conifer), sapinus (probably silver fir), fir and cypress -- and their products to culture and commerce would be difficult to overstate. The various products of colophony (made principally from conifer sap) are used in nearly every field: pitch, used for caulking ships (and the etymon of "pitchers" -- jugs and ball-tossers alike); turpentine, the essential solvent in oil painting; rosin, used to make bows grip and vibrate instruments' strings; resin, used in mummification, the production of medicine, varnishing, flavoring wine (retsina) and the production of amber. Firs, pines and spruces were essential sources for shipbuilding timber (especially masts). The publication of the work, as was typical of mid-XVIc French books of this sort, was split among three publishers: Gilles Corrozet (as here; remarkably, the printer's mark is upside-down; could this be a rare "first issue?"), Gauillaume Cavellat and Benoît Prevost. None has precedence. Adams B555; Nissen, BBI 131 (without imprint).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Second. THE LAZARD COPY. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH A UNIQUE VIEW OF JERUSALEM. Second edition, enlarged. Paris: Guillaume Cavellat, 1554. Pot quarto (8 11/16" x 6 3/16", 221mm x 157mm). [Full collation available.] With a folding woodcut views (Sinai) and an (added, see below) engraved view of Jerus…alem; and 45 in-text woodcuts (plus 3 printer's devices), of which two (foll. 78r and 92v) are full-page maps (the Hellespont and Alexandria); as well as many figured initials. Bound in later half green calf over rainbow-marbled boards. On the spine, four raised bands. Title and author gilt to the second panel, date gilt to the fourth. Blind (silver?) Gothic window-motif to the third panel. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block marbled. Sunned at the spine, and starting at the head. Rubbed at the extremities, with small patches of wear. Good margins, and quite clean, with some passages of soiling (n-n2 spots of wax) or foxing. Damp-stain to the upper spine-corner Aa3-Gg2 (24 leaves). Extra-illustrated with the view of Jerusalem. The folding view of Sinai just shaved at the lower edge; both folding views repaired at the folds verso. Ex-libris of "Paola et Bertrand Lazard" engraved by Leo Contini. With an ink manuscript biography and description of the biological contents of the volume in a later (XIXc?) hand to the verso of the second (the old) binder's blank. Pierre Belon (the protégé of the Bishop of Le Mans, whence the sobriquet; 1517-1564) is the father of comparative anatomy in the modern era. He was skilled not only in biology but in attaching himself to powerful patrons; as apothecary to Cardinal François de Tournon he traveled in the eastern Mediterranean 1546-1549. That trip through Greece, Asia Minor and northern Africa is described in the present work, first published the year before with fewer illustrations (36 in-text, without the portrait or the view of Sinai); it was published again the following year in a far commoner third edition. Belon's curiosity is limitless, and his wonderment at the people, places and things that he encounters on his journey is palpable. Particularly notable are the views of Mount Sinai, with a plan of the Monastery of Saint Catherine -- the oldest continually-inhabited monastic site, built around AD 550 at the order of Emperor Justinian -- and of the city of Jerusalem, two of the great holy sites of the Christian east that will have been unfamiliar to Belon's readers. All the while Belon describes and illustrates vipers, chameleons, giraffes, civets, langoustines and various trees (a few of the woodcuts are repeated), as well as people in their native dress. The view of Jerusalem -- "Civitas hiervsalem" -- in the present work is added, and apparently unique; the Eran Laor Cartographic Collection at the National Library of Israel (Jer-Rep 16, a photocopy of our plate) attributes the engraving, perhaps incorrectly, to Belon. It bears a relationship to the Bertelli, Ligorio and Camocio views of Jerusalem; Ligorio's, the earliest, is dated to 1558. Unlike those views, the present engraving includes the hill of Zion ("Sion") at the top left (south of the old city walls). Especially as the book has been rebound, it may have been inserted at any point in the intervening years, though it is tempting to attribute primacy to this view, which is both finer in its execution and broader in its scope than Ligorio's. The library of Paola and Bertrand Lazard was sold ("L'Orient et la Terre Sainte") at Pierre Bergé 29 April 2008 (the present volume lot 135: 4,800 hammer). The Lazards assembled one of the great XXc libraries of the Holy Land, particularly with the assistance of Nico Israel, the legendary Amsterdam bookseller. Adams B 564 (Corrozet & Cavellat); Blackmer 115; Brunet I.762; Nissen, ZBI 304 (Corrozet & Cavellat); Renouard, Cavellat 69.

Third Edition. 6.25" x 9.0", Epistle, Preface and Table of Contents, 22 unnumbered pages, 211 leaves numbered only on the recto, Privelege of the king [2 pp, hand numbered]. Printed in French with fabulous woodcut first initials throughout and 41 wood cut illustrations including mammals, sea creatures, reptiles, plants, maps and… a three-quarter profile of the author. Text is in italics with chapter headings and illustration descriptions in roman. The attractive woodcuts are attributed to Arnold Nicolai and Pierre goudet. In addition to the animal woodcuts, there are others including coins with Arabic markings, Egyptian style of dress, a Turkish archerer and two maps; one of Alexandria and its harbor from the perspective of the sea, and the other a birdseye view of both sides of the Hellespont. Originally published in 1553, this third edition, in two issues, was a joint effort between Corrozet and Guillaume Cavellat, with each having a named imprint. The elaborate woodcut border of the title page has Cavellat's device in the bottom corners, but the title page of books 2 & 3 have Corrozet's device with a heart and rose in the center surrounded by a scroll. Pierre Belon, sometimes included with the descriptive "du Mans", was a Renaissance Man with interest in the natural world, including the study of animals, ichthyology, ornithology, sociology, geography and as one of the earliest practitioners of comparative anatomy. Early in his career he served as the apothecary to Cardinal Francois of Tournon, to whom he dedicated these volumes. Under the Cardinal's patronage, he was allowed the opportunity to sail the near east as an attaché in the diplomatic mission led by Gabriel de Luetz to address Suleiman the Magnificent. He separated from the main entourage in Alexandria and traveled the near east cataloging his insightful, naturalist observations. Translation of the title page: "The Observations Of Several Singularities & memorable things, found In Greece, Asia, Judée, Egypt, Arabic, & Other Foreign Countries, compiled In three books, by Pierre Belon du Mans. Renewd again with augmented drawings. To my lord Cardinal of Tournon. The catalog containing the most notable things in this present book is the other part of this leaflet. In Paris, They are sold in the great hall of the palace, in the shop of Gilles Corrozet, 1555 With privilege of the King." Very good with spotting on the edges and light sporadic foxing throughout. A handful of coded words in manuscript on the recto and verso of the title page. Ex-libris stamp removed from title and last page, taped reinforcement to rear of title page. The map of Mt. Sinai is present and bound in prior to p. 126. The map is in VG condition with a small piece of tape on the bottom rear recto, early light wear through at the center of map along the confluence of folds. Contemporary black half leather binding with brown variegated alligator skin over boards, five raised bands on the spine, title label in gilt on the spine with date blind stamped at the bottom.

Softcover. Condizione: Very good. First. A PIONEERING WORK OF COMPARATIVE ANATOMY. First edition. Paris: Chez Guillaume Cauellat, 1555. Folio in 6s (12 13/16" x 8 9/16", 327mm x 217mm). [Full collation available.] With a portrait and 160 wood-cut illustrations. Bound in contemporary laced limp vellum with yapp edges. Manuscript…to the spine. Edges of text-block stained red and black. Presented in a blue cloth slip-case with a blue morocco lip. Vellum rippled, with a 15mm tear to the front yapp edge. Cloth ties lacking. Some general soiling to the binding. Text-block detached from the front cover (front paste-down torn) and the spine, but all still quite solid. Marginal damp-staining from E5 to the end. Lacking A6 blank (as often). Altogether, though, the text-block is quite clean with excellent margins (often in excess of 40mm at the lower edge). A wholly unsophisticated copy. Armorial bookplate of Count and Countess Esterházy-Galántha from Schloss Nordkirchen on the front paste-down. Bookplate of H. Bradley Martin to the front paste-down (from his sale, Sotheby's New York 12 December 1989, lot 1375). Pierre Belon (the protégé of the Bishop of Le Mans, whence the sobriquet; 1517-1564) is the father of comparative anatomy in the modern era. His facing illustrations of the skeleton of a man and a skeleton of a bird (pp. 40-41) must rank among the great icons of Renaissance progress and humanistic inquiry. Belon was also a proper field-scientist, traveling throughout Europe but also into North Africa and Asia Minor. He published on various subjects of natural history, but the present item enjoys the distinction of being the first European work solely on birds. The wood-cuts are extremely fine (that is, the line-work is on a minute scale), and some examples -- several artists must have worked on it -- have a sensitivity of volume and texture that outpaces the sometimes heraldic stiffness of the poses. The title boasts drawing from life, and there is no reason to doubt this; there is at times a powerful tactile quality. Crucial and often overlooked is Belon's connection to Aristotle's five books grouped as De animalibus, which, up until the fieldwork of Belon and his successors, was the standard reference on animals including birds. Belon not only cites but quotes Aristotle in Greek, which indicates, especially at this early date, that the book was aimed at highly-educated scholars rather than the broad class of savants. This concordance with Aristotle allowed Belon's pioneering research to be fitted onto the framework that had supported biology for the foregoing millennia. There appear to be three variant issues: Corrozet & Cavellat, Corrozet only and Cavellat only. The Corrozet issue has a different printer's device, and Ayer/Zimmer calls for only 139 woodcuts. The Corrozet-Cavellat issue has (according to Nissen) 160 woodcuts. The ownership of the volume is rather distinguished. The armorial bookplate bears the arms of Count Nikolaus Franz Esterházy-Galántha (1804-1885) and his wife Maria von Plettenberg-Mietingen (1809-1861). The Schloss Nordkirchen designation on the bookplate fixes the time from 1833 (their marriage) to perhaps 1885, if the bookplate were used after her death, although their son (Nikolaus Paul/Miklós Pál) inherited Nordkirchen upon his mother's death, since it belonged to the Plettenberg branch proper. The count and countess refurbished their library around 1850, and so this book might have come into their collection then. H(enry) Bradley Martin, a grandson of Henry Phipps Jr. (a partner of Andrew Carnegie in the Carnegie Steel Company), amassed one of the great collections of ornithological books. After his death in 1988, his library was disbursed in a series of Sotheby's sales beginning in 1989; the complete catalogue runs to nine volumes. It is difficult to imagine a superior provenance. Anker pp. 9-10, Ayer/Zimmer p. 52 (Corrozet), Garrison-Morton 283 (Cavellat issue), Nissen IVB 86 (Corrozet-Cavellat), Norman 180.

(Graesse, I, 331 - Brunet, I, 762 - Larousse, 524). BEL EXEMPLAIRE, frais, au corps d'ouvrage sans rousseurs. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.
