Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. This book may be of particular interest to someone who is or was associated with Dartmouth College. Both selectors were from Dartmouth, but that's not the reason. The book for sale was once owned by one of the 'Selectors', the former chairman of the English department at Dartmouth, Benfield Pressey. He signed his name on the first front end paper (I believe it's the only signed copy of this book for sale on the Internet). I purchased it along with a several other books that he owned some years ago, other books by and not by him that he had signed his name in (one of them, Essays Toward Truth: Studies In Orientation, I currently have listed for sale). Beyond that, he marked up this book pretty well, penciled comments on some of the margins, penciled thoughts and questions at the end of some of the plays. I would guess that he was teaching these plays and used the book to prepare. But that is surely only a guess. 'W. Benfield Pressey came to Dartmouth as an instructor in 1919 after serving in the Marine Corps in World War I. He taught courses in drama, Shakespeare, poetry, advanced composition and motion-picture writing. He became a full professor in 1930 and subsequently was named Willard Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory. He headed the department from 1935 to 1938. His movie-writing course, begun in 1939, led to the establishment of the Irving Thalberg Library of the Motion Picture at Dartmouth. He also wrote extensively on American and English literature for "The New International Year Book" and other publications and was co-author of more than 20 textbooks, mostly on drama.' You can see the green covers of the book in the photos. They are in pretty decent condition. The gilt lettering on the spine is mostly bright. The gilt design on the front is a little faded in spots. The edges are in very solid shape. The two bottom corners have spots of rub-through. There's a small spot of the same at the bottom edge of the spine. There's a little smooth rubbing here and there, also a spot on the rear cover, but the covers are pretty clean. They present pretty nicely. I don't see any staining on the page edges. Importantly, the book (which runs only 1177 pages) is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The spine is also straight. The interior of the book is in very nice condition as well. I turned over every page (not a chance), I scrolled through the pages and thus far I haven't found any soiling. And there are no markings in the book. And there are no attachments. It is NOT ex-library. Something did press down vertically on the second front end paper (not the signed first front end paper) so there are two thin lines/impressions going from top to bottom of the page, and that pattern is repeated on all the pages through to the first page of the first play where it can only be vaguely made out and becomes irrelevant. So that is something you'll have to put up with if you want this special book. Professor Pressey did not turn down any of the corners to mark his place. In fact, there is little to no creasing over all of the numbered pages. While I don't have a clear memory of where I purchased the book, I am noticing that one of his daughters resided in Westport, Connecticut, a place where I have purchased many books over the years. Some of the playwrights whose works are contained in the book: Ibsen, Chekhov, Pirandello, Strindberg, O'Neill, Maxwell Anderson, Robert Sherwood, Maxim Gorki, Somerset Maugham, O'Casey. Signed by Author(s).
