A little known work by Flagg, written while working for the Marietta, Ohio Gazette; "is but the hasty production of a rainy month in winter, in absence of every other amusement" dedication dated: Marietta, March, 1843. Condizione: Good. - Over 60 words penned on 5-1/2 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide light blue paper. In his letter to John Huntington Butler, Benjamin Park, Sr. writes that he is staying in "a large house opposite the Park" and is "much happier in most respects than when in New York." He suggests the Butler come see him when he is "up at the Atheneum some day." He wants Butler to "ask Mr. Folsom for his latest catalogue and send it to me". Signed "Park Benjamin". An early annotation at the bottom of the letter states "From Mr Butler". Once folded, creased and soiled, the letter is mounted onto heavier white stock cut out from an album. Good. The American poet, journalist and editor Park Benjamin Sr. (1809-1864) was the founder of several newspapers. Born in British Guiana, he was sent to New England and practiced law in Boston before moving on to editorial work in Boston and New York. He co-founded the literary journal "The Evening Tattler" with Rufus Wilmot Griswold. He and John Huntington Butler, to whom this letter is addressed, launched "The New World" in 1839. Benjamin counted Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe among his acquaintances and was once sued for libel by James Fenimore Cooper. Charles Folsom, who Park Benjamin mentions, ran the famous University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts and "the house opposite the park" he mentions is where his son, the autograph dealer Walter Benjamin, was born.…
