Written by a product of the Kentucky Hills, this story is told by Sid about his Hill Country family who have the problem of not working and getting the relief money or working in poverty. The death of his uncle in WWII and the survivor's money brings out all the freeloaders to the new rental house. This dream is short lived and poverty soon returns. The twist is that Private Tussie does return (mistaken burial) and Sid finds out that his aunt is really his mother - thus Sid has a father and a mother and the father is a changed man from the war and is now industrious and works for wages setting a proper example for Sid. Octavo, hardcover, previous owner's label on inside cover, sun to spine, light scuffing to boards else VG in green boards with embossed design 328 pp. including color illustrations by Thomas Hart Benton. Parkman's work may be the most familiar piece of western travel writing to modern readers. The exciting adventures of the young Boston Brahmin loose on the plains makes excellent reading. Field remarks: "Mr. Parkman had all the genuine love of adventure of a frontiersman, the taste for the picturesque and romantic of an artist, and the skill in narration of an accomplished raconteur. It is not too high praise to say that his pictures of savage life are not excelled. " Benton's illustrations are exquisite.
