The contributing authors examine "the contradictory range of causes that the poster has served: political, ideological, artistic and commercial . . . [drawing from] such diverse sources as Art Nouveau, Secession, Dada, Constructivism, Bauhaus, Futurism, and De Stijl" (quoted from the dj front flap). Six chapters as follows: "Broadside to Billboard" by Mildred Friedman, "Posters at the Turn of the Century" by Robert Brown, "Function and Abstraction in Poster Design" by Dawn Ades, "The Russian Film Poster: 1920-1930" by Alma Law, "Thoughts on the Poster" by Armin Hofmann, and "Collecting Graphic Art" by Merrill C. Berman. Produced in conjunction with an exhibition first shown at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, May 12-August 12, 1984.
