A Time In The Arctic Is A Stunning Collection Of Life Images From Canada's Far North, As Experienced By Bern Will Brown. Bern Came To The North With His Wife In 1948 As A Young Catholic Missionary. He Travelled Extensively In Canada's North By Canoe, Dog Team, And By Bush Plane. In Addition To His Religious Duties, Father Brown Performed Routine Medical Work Such As Delivering Babies Sewing Up Axe Cuts, And Pulling Teeth. He Has Also Been A Fire Warden, Dogcatcher, Storekeeper, Postmaster, And Newspaper Editor. He Is An Accomplished Photographer And A Well-Known Artist. Most Of The Photographs In This Book Were Taken In The 1950S When Many Northerners Still Led Traditional Lives And Had Strong Ties To The Land. The Photographs In This Book Are Just A Small Sample Of His Work, But One That Shows A Time In The Arctic That Is An Important Part Of Our Northern Heritage. Bern Will Brown Arrived In The Arctic In 1948 As A Catholic Priest Belonging To The Missionary Order. He Was Moved All Over The North West Territories, From The Crees In The South, To The Eskimos In The North. He Travelled Between Those Communities, And Far Beyond, By Canoe, Dog Team And By Bush Plane, Which He Piloted Himself. In The Process He Built Seven New Missions And Is Presently Living In The Last One At Colville Lake, N.W.T. Signed And Inscribed By Author.

Dust jacket is untorn, mildly shelfworn, with moderate creasing and scuffing to edges. --- From mushing dog-teams 70 miles in 60-below blizzards, to building beautiful churches from hand-cut spruce logs; from staking land claims for uranium, to helping unionize a mine - Bern Will Brown has had a career like few Roman Catholic priests. As a teen, Brown joined the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, an order of missionary priests working in the Arctic. Brown's first challenge was to learn French as well as the tongue of his Hare Indian parishioners. He then mastered fishing and hunting, breeding and driving dog-teams, building igloos and making snowshoes. To his many priestly duties were added those of carpenter, musician, and medic - delivering babies and pulling teeth. In 1971, Brown was married in his own log church to Margaret Steen, a part-Eskimo woman. They continue to live among their native neighbours in Colville Lake, above the Arctic Circle. Brown now photographs and paints highly regarded scenes of life in his beloved North. "Arctic Journal" is bursting with remarkable tales, both comic and tragic, of a way of life that existed nowhere else on earth, and that has now disappeared forever.
